Mother Katherine’s sermon preached on Apr. 16, 2023

Sermon preached by The Rev. Katherine Sedwick, Rector, on Apr. 16, 2023: “I’ve come to think the reason we hear this reading from the Gospel of John every single year on this Second Sunday of Easter (rather than a three year rotation of different ones as usual) is that even for those gathered in Christ’s name two thousand years later — the resurrection can be as hard for us to grasp as it was then, and Thomas is the designated proxy for uncertainty and disbelief.”

Sermon preached by The Rev. Katherine Sedwick, Rector, on Easter Day, Apr. 9, 2023: “Some consider the Gospel writer’s different accounts of Jesus‘s resurrection a sign that they can’t get their act together. If it were in the news this morning we’d wonder which station had the true account and which was wrong. This world-changing revelation cannot be fact-checked…”

Doubt can be a four-letter word for many of us. It can seem to be the opposite of faith, even the enemy of faith. But if we understand what we mean when we use the term “doubt”, we find that doubt has been an inevitable part of Christian life since the first days. And it can offer us a richer and more powerful Christian experience.

Alleluia! Alleluia! The world needs Easter right now, more than ever. Considering all that is happening and all that you and I carry in our hearts today, and knowing how long we have waited to come together like this, it is gloriously good to proclaim our Alleluias! While we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus with great fanfare and flowers and joy we know it isn’t necessarily so for those in critical need or deep grief, people of the Ukraine or any war torn place or under great threat. The hope dawning in Christ’s resurrection also emerges in small quiet ways. Ways that sneak up on us when we are in dark times, because resurrection is not so much a single historical moment or even a grand annual event. It is a process —of seeking, finding, living, and welcoming it however it comes.

The Day of Pentecost:Whitsunday May 23, 2021 Happy Feast of Pentecost to you! I have to say, it’s pretty cool to be celebrating the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the church as we get ready to reopen this church, and regather together here in this place. When you return to this building and finally see each other in the flesh, I bet there will be a sweet familiarity. It might even feel like coming home. And at the same time, it will be so much more than familiarity, or homecoming, won’t it? It will be a new beginning we’ve been longing and hoping for, and it will transform...

Psalm 98 is a psalm of praise and a hymn of Enthronement of the Lord, intended for the enthronement festival of the New Year. A community of faith is formed and strengthened by praising God, and here the psalm’s movement is from expressing joy at the mighty acts of Yahweh throughout history, to the deep promise God makes with us and the awareness of God’s justice and equity. The psalm is so powerful, joyful, and evocative that it’s assigned for Christmas as well as five other times, including today.
