My Saint Michael’s Story: Anita & Joe Donahou
Posted by Saint Michaels on Sun, Oct 31, 2021 in Giving
Joe and I have been attending St. Michaels for almost 20 years. During that time, we’ve worn many hats here: Joe designed the space you are sitting in, and the addition. I’ve been in the choir. We’ve both served on the vestry more than once, and we’ve both been Senior Warden. We’ve attended far too many work parties to name. We’ve taught the teens, been on mission trips, did Rake and Runs (remember those?). We’ve hosted fellowship events and helped run capital campaigns. I’ve worked in the office and helped develop the livestream process with Jason. Joe has cleaned out the gunky parking lot drains. We’ve attending Diocesan Convention. We’ve put up décor, and we’ve taken it back down, year after year, season after season. I think you get the idea – we’ve been involved. We love St. Michael’s, there is no place quite like it.

Six years ago, soon after my husband, John (known as Fr. John), retired as the Rector at St. John’s, Olympia, we relocated to Issaquah. At the time, we planned to return to what we referred to as our “home church”. After our first week of unpacking boxes and putting things away, we decided to go around the block to St. Michael’s instead of our “home church.” Well, here it is, six years later, and although John is no longer with us, I am still here. This is my “home church.”

As a member of the vestry, during the pandemic, I witnessed firsthand the extraordinary efforts of members of the St Michael’s staff and community to keep our church in the hearts and minds of its members and to stay connected with them. When the pandemic restrictions were announced and St Michael’s had to close its doors for what was then assumed to be just a couple of weeks or so, meetings were held to figure out how to keep the doors open virtually, at least for the time being.

Since coming to Saint Michael’s, I see it as a family outside of my own family that welcomes you with open arms. This was the most evident during the peak of COVID when we had our small buddy groups and you had that opportunity to talk with those you’ve known since joining the congregation or those you’re meeting for the first time. This has also resulted in my daughter Zoey making her first friend in our church nursery.

I’m Melanie Audette and this is my St. Michael’s story. Think for a moment of the person who first taught you to pray. For me, this was my Grandma Pat. And it was Mrs. Finnegan, a neighbor, who confirmed my faith – oddly through a little service on her living room floor after a Bible study. Who was that person for you?

My husband, Ben and I are pretty new to the St. Michael’s community. I had been seeking a new spiritual home for a couple of years, and I believe, it is divinely inspired how my husband and I found St. Michael’s.
